aqueous vs vitreous humor
humorous vs vitreous humor If you ever study the mechanics of an outdated chamber, you will notice that much of the interior is composed of empty space. This is because a camera uses a lens to focus the light on a special photo sensitive film plane, and for that image to be clear, there must be a very specific distance between the lens and the lens. The works in the same way, with a flexible lens on the front of the eye focusing the incoming light on the light-sensitive cells that coat the retina on the back. But the eye does not have a rigid external structure like a camera, so it needs to be filled with a liquid that is clear enough to allow the light to pass, but that provides sufficient internal pressure to maintain the shape of the eye. This is where aqueous and vitreous humors come into play. These fluids are extremely important, and any problem with them may have serious adverse effects on your vision. Water HumorIn the eye there are several compartments, or cameras. Two of these chambers, the former (between the cornea in the front of the eye and the iris) and the later (between the iris and the lens) are filled with a thin, watery fluid called aqueous humor. After being produced by the ciliar body, the fluid flows through the pupil to fill the previous and subsequent chambers, after which it drains out of the eye through a structure called the trabecular mesh. If the ciliar body produces too much, or if the trabecular mesh does not allow the fluid to drain fast enough, the internal pressure in the eye will increase. If left untreated, this high eye pressure (called eye hypertension) can potentially lead to , a serious condition that can cause permanent vision loss in some individuals. Vitreous HumorThe eighty percent of the space within the eye, the area behind the previous and subsequent chambers and between the lens and the retina, is filled with a clear substance, similar to the gel, called vitreous humor. Consisting mainly in the water, with small amounts of collagen, proteins, salts and sugars, the vitreus has a firm consistency, similar to the jelly and helps to maintain the spherical shape of the eye. As we age, the vitreus gradually becomes more liquid and starts shrinking, away from the retina and the inner walls of the eye. Small fibers that were attached to the retina once separate and float freely in the vitreous humor, casting shadows in the retina. These shadows are called because they look like dots, dust, cod cloths or floating chains in your vision, but they are usually nothing to worry about. More seriously, it is possible that the vitreous detachment of the retina can create a small tear on the surface of the retina itself. Even the smallest retina tears need to be treated promptly, either with lasers or cryotherapy, because if the vitreous liquid is seen through the tear can cause the retina to escape from the surrounding tissue, such as wet wallpaper that is removed from the wall. This is called a tornado or can cause permanent vision loss. Problems with aqueous or vivid humors are potentially very dangerous because there are few signs of early warning. Patients generally do not notice any serious symptoms until the damage has already begun. That's why it's not important that you come to Georgia Eye Physicians and Surgeons on a regular basis, especially if you're over fifty years old when vitreous disorders become more common.
